A modest refurbishment of a 1970’s brick dwelling. The orientation of the original house was very poor for the climate. To solve this problem we demolished half the internal layout and the very low pitched roof, and reconfigured the design to work well for the tropics. The new configuration has high ceilings throughout and captures the breezes and views to the mountains. We added deep verandah spaces on both sides of the house to shade the living areas from the sun. We retained as much of the crisp red brick as possible as a nod to the original house and character of the area.
One of our philosophies at People Oriented Design is to develop whole-of-site solutions, with architecture and landscape integrated to improve connection to the outdoors. A new private courtyard and generous rear deck extend the Whitfield refurb's living space, and provide flexible options for living and entertaining.
